USEFUL INFORMATION

We would recommend you consult with a professional insurance broker when arranging cover.

Always read your policy schedule and renewal notice. Review your sum insured at each renewal. Be careful in what adjustments you make. See if there are increases in your policy excess or reductions in your cover.

If you have a tenanted property, this provides a different risk to insurers.
Always make your insurers aware.

If you change from owner occupancy to a tenancy arrangement, advise them immediately.

If you have a lodger or share your home with paying guests, tell them.
Remember insurance companies only cover you against fire damage if the property becomes unoccupied or unfurnished during the period of cover. Generally the period is more than thirty days. Check with your individual insurer to establish what the period of unoccupancy is relevant to your own policy.

You should have jewellery and antique items valued. Make sure you specifically retain detailed photographs of all pieces of jewellery and antiques.

Any items over €1000 should have its description and value noted on the policy.

Always check with your insurer or broker to establish if any warranties or endorsements apply to your contract.  Seek an explanation of them in the context of how they apply to your policy and what obligations they place on you.

Always seek a plumbing contractor’s advice on how to correctly turn off the water or heating supply before you do so.

Make sure your intruder alarm is in full working order.  Ensure that you have it maintained annually.  If you advise insurers that you have an alarm system and receive a discount, most insurers will include a warranty to the above effect.  If the system is not in working order, then you could invalidate your insurance cover / contract.

Smoke alarms save lives!! Always have smoke alarms installed in your property. Regularly check they are in good working order.

Additional lighting around the perimeter of your property can improve your security and protect against intruders.  Always secure the property fully and turn on your intruder alarm whenever you leave the property and before you go to bed at night.

Have fire extinguishers and blankets in your property. Always check they are fully operational.  Take a little time to make sure that all occupants know how to use them.

God forbid you would suffer a fire but in the event make sure everyone knows the escape plan.
